Thousands celebrate the switch on of Merthyr’s Christmas Lights
Thousands packed into Merthyr Tydfil town centre on Saturday 17th November for the launch of the town's Christmas festivities culminating in the switch on of the Christmas lights by Merthyr born Commonwealth Games star, Latalia Bevan.
The silver medal winning gymnast was joined on the balcony of Redhouse by Capital FM Breakfast’s Matt and Polly and, of course, Santa himself. Everyone enjoyed a performance by the Tenovus ‘Sing With Us’ choir and a special appearance by children’s favourites, PJ Masks.
Event organisers, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil Business Improvement District (BID), were delighted with the response to the event which included activities throughout the town centre during the day leading up to the big switch-on.
Antonia Pompa, BID Co-ordinator said “Saturday was a wonderful day for everyone in the town centre. Some 30,000 visitors enjoyed a fabulous festive occasion. My message to shoppers is to continue supporting your town centre businesses and make this a very special Merthyr Christmas."
She added, “We have received very positive feedback from businesses across the town centre. They have reported excellent trading throughout the day and a lovely friendly atmosphere in town.”
Christmas celebrations continue in Merthyr Tydfil with a fabulous free Santa’s Grotto in St Tydfil Shopping Centre every Friday and Saturday until Christmas.
