Merthyr Tydfil Chartist Trail
Merthyr Tydfil has always had a reputation for radicalism and protest! As such, it should come as no surprise that it was right at the centre of Chartist activity in south Wales from the late 1830s until the late 1860s.
On this guided walk led by local historian, Viv Pugh, we'll visit several sites associated with Chartism in Merthyr from pubs to chapels to open air meeting places. Where was the Welsh language Chartist newspaper, Udgorn Cymru, printed? How did a women's Chartist branch come to meet in a local public house? And what is the story behind the distinctive blue flannel waistcoats worn by Merthyr Chartists?
All this and more on this fascinating tour through a tumultuous time in Merthyr Tydfil's history!
